Why I hate Gateway

I hate Gateway with the passion of a thousand fiery suns. The reasons are many and varied. I guess it all started back in 2000. I ordered a new computer to replace my aging Compaq. I had been served well by that computer, but it was not really upgradable and I was getting into digital photography which demands a lot more storage than the little Compaq could provide. So I ordered a Performace 1000 from Gateway. The order went smoothly and I didn't have a problem with the computer until after 3 years of ownership. That's when things really headed down hill.

One morning, I woke up to find my computer totally frozen. I had to do a hard reset, and when it came back... actually, it never came back. It was deader than a doornail. So I called Gateway's crack support team. They had me try somethings, and in the end diagnosed that the motherboard had failed. And so the saga began.

I found I could not use my Microphone on my new Gateway. It has a built in Sound Board. Yuck.
I bought a new SoundBlaster
Sound Card and still no Microphone.
My first computer was a Gateway and it has worked Great for years.
Do Not buy a Gateway now, they are Junk. They have sold the Company to Acer and I see why.
I might as well have flushed the $900 I spent for the new computer, down the drain.
Then again, all the Companies have gone Chineese, so where do we go now?
Don

They freaking run out of hard drives. How the hell do you run out of hard drives. Tech support sucks. They dont know what they are talking about.

YES, GATEWAY DOES SUCK!! I only wish I had read this, and other forums, before making my purchase. My machine was sent back and forth 6 times. Of course, the first time the hard drive crashed was right at the 1 year mark. I relied on my old Compaq for the EIGHT months it took for them to send a 'working' one which is now crashing again. I've spoken with folks at corporate. They want you to believe they are going to relsolve your problems but, don't believe them. When you click 'Agree' in their contract, there is a loophole for them -even if PC is under warranty- how they replace your piece-of-shit machine is at their discretion which is why they just keep sending out Refurbished computers. I tell everyone that GATEWAY SUCKS and to NEVER BUY ONE!

donald, I agree 100%! Gateway was once a very high quality product but are now totally junk. Their tech support is terrible. Donna, my experience is very similar to yours. I bought a laptop from them last year as a graduation gift for my wife (for 600+ dollars) and it still sits totally worthless on my living room table. They are not even refurbished computers as they claim. They are what are called "throwaways" which is exactly what they do with the machine you send them and replace it with another piece of junk. If I can get enough people together to join me in suing Gateway in a class action lawsuit I will. But this is a VERY expensive proposition and I would need a minimum number of litigants to pursue this. I will frequently monitor this site to determine how much interest this sparks. Keep the comments coming.

Its not so bad. I bought this $900.00 dollar paper weight from gateway. True I could have just bought a normal paper weight but this one looks like a laptop that acts as a heater and has a failing hard drive. I emailed gateway to say thank you but they just told me my warrenty had expired. Thanks Gateway =D (just under a 2 yr. owner)

Well Gateway does suck but it’s not the machines fault it’s the dumbass overseas “help” they’ve hired to “answer” customer’s questions. I have need of tinkering with a system that I own that happens to be a Gateway computer and those dumbasses won’t send me the BIOS source. They say it’s against policy….to send my the source code for the BIOS…..for a computer I own….sigh. I think that the real reason is that the raisin head that was “helping ” me doesn’t know a BIOS from the cow that he thinks is his long dead aunt. I also think that if he took his finger out of his nose long enough to ponder the brain damage he’s most likely doing, he might not pick his meals anymore. I’m kinda pissed….ya think????

I also am in the belief that Gateway sucks! I paid all this money to get a good computer for school and work, and it has spent more time getting "fixed" then i have had the opportunity to use it. NOw they want me to pay more money to ship it in again instead of just replacing it. i will never buy another gateway ever and i hope people read these posting before buying one as well!

Gateway stinks. I KNEW it, too. But I fell for them again in May. Now I've got another POS and their tech support will not stand behind their products. At least not until you pay them more money. Not going to happen. If they only knew how much they are losing in bad PR. There are SO many wesites like this one. And I'm off to post on all of them. Just sharing my wonderful experience.

I bought a 1000$ Gateway Computer in 2011 for gaming. At exactly 360 days after purchase, it got the following problems:

-System 32: broken;
-Safe mode: broken;
-Blue screens: yes;
-corrupted files: yes;
-drivers: broken;
-Windows kernel mode driver: broken;
-Display driver: broken;
-Motherboard: fried;
-Fan: crazy refrigerator noise;
-Voltage problems: yes;
-False advertisement: yes, they falsified the computer's specs.

I'm still waiting for my computer because they do not know how to fix it. There is a serious conception flaw with the DX4850-45C (You'll notice that it officially doesn't even exist!!!).

It's not just Gateway... Acer sucks pretty badly as well!... I think they own gateway, or the aholes at acer just service them.... very badly!!! I bought two Gateway computers - laptop and desktop. The desktop has never worked. I bought from Costco and they have a concierge that calls the company for you... not much help. The idiot from gateway's service department insisted to both me and the concierge that I puchased the computer 3 months before it was manufactured about 10 months before I puchased it... My laptop started making crackling noises sparking and would no longer charge, was sent to acer for repairs under the warranty in original packaging. Everything was in its own compartment in protective wrapping the foam screen protector in place. However, when they sent it back it was thrown in a box with no protection, no packing materials, the charger thrown in on top. And the bubble wrap sleeve that the charger was in was just tossed in the box(seperate from the charger. AND THE COMPUTER WASN'T EVEN FIXED. Still wouldn't charge even though they obviously had it open. Is was not put back together correctly (the case had gaps where it hadn't been put back together) and two screws were missing!

I recently bought one and I wished to upgrade the hard drive because I needed more space as I work with media a lot and to my dismay they don't have any firmware at all for upgrades or any support besides for the piece of shit factory default crap they put in it when I called and asked they simply said they don't support my hard drive they they only support western digital, but they openly endorse instructions to replace the hard Drive but I guess when they say that they mean buy the same hard drive and replace the one we gave you with it.

When people say buy Gateway I say NEVER AGAIN.

I had an old, refurbished HP give up the ghost & needed a quick replacement to finish a project I was involved in at the time. I checked out the local ads & saw Walmart offering a Gateway laptop(NE56R31u)at at what seemed to be a reasonable price. What a mistake that turned out to be!!!
What a piece of junk. The speakers were dead on arrival, but I did not discover this until this till the 3 week return period was up. When I mentioned this to the folks at Walmart they said this was the norm for the Gateways they sold. Pure junk.
